I'm descended from this Henry (there are several in Newberry at this time). I believe he's the one that had property on Goosepond Creek. I believe that the four children you mention are Mary, Elizabeth, Marshall and Henry, but he had two and possibly four additional children by his first wife (Molly Pitts(?), daughter of Henry Pitts): Edney, Sarah, Jehu and John. I'm descended from Marshall, and here are the basics of what we know: 1. Henry Coate b. before 1769, d. 1817, Newberry Co, SC 2. children by first wife: children by second wife (name unknown but assumed up to now to be Hannah mentioned in his will.) 3. Marshall Coate b. 1816 Newberry Co, SC d. approx 1863, Coweta Co., GA 4. children: 5. Moses Walker Coats b. 7/25/1850 in Coweta Co., GA, d. 9/7/1919 in Carroll Co, GA. 6. Children: My father did most of this research many years ago. Here's the theory for Hannah being the second wife of Henry: - 1820 census, Newberry Co. SC (p. 122) shows a Hanah Coats with 2 males < 10, 1 female < 10, 1 female < 16 & 1 female < 45. Assumption is that these are sons Marshall & Henry and daughters Mary & Elizabeth as well as herself. - 1840 census, Coweta, Co. Ga (p.343) has a Hannah Coats with 1 male < 5, 1 female < 30 & 1 female < 60. These are believed to be Hannah and daughter Elizabeth with her son Wilson. An Elizabeth Coats was 'keeping house' for William B. Shell in Coweta Co, GA in 1870. A Wilson Coats lived in Pike Co, Ga in 1860. I do not know the documentation that initially connected Elizabeth and Wilson. Will need to investigate further. Note that the next census record of Marshall in in 1850, Coweta Co, GA. with family as listed above. There's also a Hannah Coats as head of household, age 60 b. in SC, with an Elizabeth b. in SC, age 35, and Wilson age 10 b. in Ga. These ages & places of birth seem to match with SC info. - Hannah Coats sold 100 acres of land in Newberry Co, SC in 1832. In 1840 a Hannah appears in Coweta Co, GA. Could the sale of land have been in preparation to a move to GA? I need to determine how she obtained this land. In "Coweta County Chronicles for One Hundred Years" by Mary Jones & Lily Reynolds there's a mention that several people moved to Coweta County from Newberry Co, SC after Coweta was opened in 1828 (it was part of a purchase from the Creek Indians). The following web site has MUCH information on Coats/Coates/Coate families in several states, especially SC:
