A biography/family history of John Q. Coates is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 877 & 878.
John Q. was born, 16 Apr 1862, son of John T. and Amanda (Smith) Coates. Amanda was born in Randolph County, MO, and, died at Moberly, MO, in 1868. John T. was born in Kentucky in 1830, moved with his parents to Moberly, MO, in 1833; became a farmer, retired in 1910 and moved to Oklahoma City, OK, where he died in Sept. 1919. John T. and Amanda Coates had the following children: T.D. (Moberly, MO); Minnie (Mrs. J.F. Rucker, Moberly, MO); Elizabeth (Mrs. William Tolle, Oklahoma City, OK); H. W. and John Q (Martinsdale, MT).
John Q. Coates attended rural school in Randolph County, MO, the State Normal School at Winchester, TN, and William Jewel College at Liberty, MO. In 1882, he secured a position at dry goods & clothing store at Moberly, MO, and remained there learning the mercantile business until 1891 when he moved to Salt Lake City, UT, and worked in a store for a few months. In Jun 1891, he located to Helena, MT, where he worked in the mercantile business. 1893-1898, he worked in the same business in Great Falls, MT. He accepted a position as a department manager of a men's clothing store, Symms Dry Goods Company, at Butte, MT, and remained there until 1910 when he became the owner of his own store at Martinsdale, MT. He and his brother, H.W., operated it under the name of Coates Bros.
In 1901, John Q. married Miss Josephine Weishar, daughter of Louis and Catherine (Miller) Weishar of Edina, MO.
John Q. died, 9 Jan 1939, Meagher Co., MT
Josephine died, 3 Feb 1941, Meagher Co, MT
