I'm helping my friend, Muriel Coates, research her family and find she has a link with your line. Muriel descends from John's brother Edward b. 1844 in Chester-le-Street. Edward married Elizabeth Crudace/Cruddis in 1867 in Heworth.Their family are still in the area.
According to the 1881 census John & Ann are in South Otterington with a farm of 77 acres.
Would love to compere notes.
