Coates Family Genealogy Forum

I am trying to trace the ancestry of Thomas Coates, d. 1920 in Shilton, County Durham, England at about the age of 36. He was married to Amanda Forbes, b. 1889, d. 1982 in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Thomas had one sister, called May I believe, which may have been a diminuitive of Mary. Thomas and Amanda had three sons, Harry, Sidney and Norman, (my father) and was killed in a railway accident. I believe the family originated in Yorkshire and was granted a family coat of arms for service to the Duke of York in the losing cause known as the War of the Roses. I have a copy of that coat, by the way, as well as its heraldic significance. Whether there is a direct link from this line all the way back is uncertain, since the name 'Coates' means "cottage dweller"' and could have been consigned to a tenant farmer, for instance. Alternatively, some have suggested that the family stretches even further back to Normandy, France, where the name is derived from 'cote' meaning 'coast', 'side', 'bank', etc., and escaped religious persecution by crossing the English Channel.
