I have since found my Coates family in the 1861 Windham Twp, Norfolk Co., Ontario census. There was a Mary Coates age 16, born about 1845. I think that it said she was born in Ontario, although it wasn't clear.
My source for the Stonington, CT Coates family was from a book about the family at my local Historical Library. It could be available at Historical libraries in large cities.
