The Coates in my family tree are from Coneysthorpe nr Malton Yorks but lived in Scarborough before that. I have a John Coates married to a Harriet Martin Married in 1824 in Winthorpe, Notts. The only thing I know about this John is that he was dead before the 1851 census. I have just found a John Coates death reg in Richmond 1845 and have sent off for the certificate. The Coates married into the Fell side of my family tree which can be seen at vmorley.co.uk
