Ms. Dearing:
I am thinking about my mother's genealogy after some years and came across this Coates family site. The Ransom Coates you inquired about was my mother's great-grandfather. Her grandfather was Henry (actually Harmon) Sylvester Coates, who married Margaret Nason in Iowa and lived mostly in Nebraska. I noticed the messages that followed yours. The lineage of this family is complicated. They are absolutely descended from the Robert Coates who founded Lynn, Mass., and were connected to many prominent New England families. But William and Zipporah (Palmer) fell on bad times -- I have many summons to court from William's father-in-law trying to collect bad debts. So they emigrated west, and the children become hard to follow. Ransom's father was Rufus Coates (sometimes they spell it without the 'e'), and he died here in Indiana. One of his sons, Noyes, has a large tombstone in DeKalb County. But the rest of them were ordinary farmers, and didn't leave behind many records. There is not doubt that Ransom is Rufus's son, but the absolute documentary evidence is lacking -- if it existed all the descendants could apply to the Mayflower Society, if that kind of thing interests you. The key to following them is that they tended to use family names as Christian names, so when you find these Palmers and Billings and Noyes, you know you're probably on the right track. If you ever come across proof about our Ransom being Rufus's son (he was clearly named for his uncle Ransom, son of William) do let me know.
