Thanks, Lawrence for your posting. I think there may have been two different Coates families in Grayson County. My grandfather was Clarence Coates, son of Lawson Coates. If I remember right, the 1860 Grayson census lists a John Coates who is appearantly not related to my line. Perhaps this is your ancestor. He is listed as being born in Connecticut.
