I, too, have seen references to both spellings as well as 'Coate', and seem to originate from 'De Cote' in Frankland (France). There was a prominant officer to Charlemagne during the invasion of England in 1066 AD that may be the progenitor of the variouss Coat(e)s, includinng the thread & textiles mfg. family. My ancesters were from Haambridge, Sussex, Eng. & joined Charles Fox in the Soc. of Friends, cominng to the colonies in the late 17th & early 18th centuries. Several other branches of Coate(s) migrated also to PA & NJ, & are now scattered throughout the states & Canada. Some researchers claim these various families are tied into royal families of Eng, France, Scotland, Ireland & the Scandinavian states.
