I am researching the COATS surname in Rowan County, North Carolina. I have identified a family headed by a William Coats that was in the area by at least 1778 and maybe as early as 1754. William and several of his sons, daughters and their spouses moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee around 1812. My great-great grandfather, Wylie, remained in North Carolina. I am currently trying to determine where William came from. Is he part of the Newberry COATE line? Did he come directly from New Jersey? Pennsylvania? Virginia? Or is he connected to the Johnston County, North Carolina line who most likely are connected to Elizabeth Coats who was in the Albermarle County area of North Carolina in the 1690s?
