Hi, Richard. I think we are related. Some of the information as to dates and spelling of last names differ but they are close. I am a descendant of John Coate, b. 1623 in England and d. 29 Dec, 1699, m. 1664 in England to Elizabeth Humphrey, no birth date but d. Dec., 1720, with only one child, Samuel Coate, b. 18 Nov., 1670 Somerset, England, d. Nov., 1733, Amwell, H Co., NJ who m. 1 June, 1695, Mary SAUNDERS. They had one son, Henry Coate, b. 1727, d. bet 1758-1761, New Garden MM, SC and m. 1746 to Esther WILSON. They had a son John COATE, b. 1747, d. 7 Aug., 1809, Newberry Co., SC, m. 1765 to Rachel WRIGHT, b. 10 Nov., 1747, Prince Georges Co., MD, and had 8 children, my direct ancestor William COATE Sr., b. 1765, d. 1826, Marion Co., IN, m. 1780 to Mary JAY. They had 10 children, William Jr. who was my direct ancestor. The interesting thing was that all of the William COATE, Sr./Mary JAY COATE children were named COATS and that is how the family continued to my mother, Thelma Jean COATS/FERBERT.
