The Coan geneaology texts I have read are generally based on those three sons, but for some reason, our line picked up Coon instead of Kuhn, then changed it to Coan after 1850. Interestingly, several Coon lines, all from the same line, changed their names at approximately the same time.

I've worked on the Michigan line before and found it to be a descendant of the 3 sons. The Michigan line is well tracked in the sense. Find the Coan Geneology text, too. Also, this line is well referenced in Salt Lake City and with the folks at Broderbund Software (Family Tree Maker.)
