Changed from Coon to Coan circa 1850s. Oldest known ancestor: John D. Coon, b. 1790 Fayette Co., PA. Moved to Lafayette, Ind. about 1832. Sons include Thomas Peter Coon/Coan, the eldest, b. 1814 Fayette Co., PA, settled in Illinois, and James P. Coon/Coan, b. 1824 in Ohio, became wealthy hotelier and landowner in Indiana after 1845. Both sons changed their names to Coan after 1850 census.

Looking for any information from other descendants...MANY Indiana and Illinois Coans are from this line.
