Coad and Shipping 1800-1900 Cornwall and Belgium
Hi Listers
I am researching my Phillips ancestors who came from Port Isaac during the 1800's then moved to St Austell in 1883.
They owned shares in many ships and managed them aswell, William Cock Phillips went on to own a substantial fleet of mainly schooners registered at Padstow.
The link with the Coads/Coodes is
Joseph Coad B. 1781 married on 30 Sep 1809Dorcas Wellington (of Luxulyan) b. 1790
Their eldest daughter Elizabeth Coad (of Luxulyan) b. 1810 married in 1837 William Chalk (of Port Isaac) b. 14 Jan 1811
Elizabeth and William had a daughter Mary Jane Chalk (of port Isaac) b. 22 Aug 1841 she married on 9 Jun 1862William Cock Phillips (of port Isaac) b. 22 Aug 1841.
William Cock Phillips carried on business with the Coad's who where 'Shipping Agents' in Antwerp.
My Gt. Uncle John Phillips b. 1909 who lived in Cornwall made some research in the 1950-1990 into our the family history, he was in touch with John Coad of St. Ives. In my Gt Uncle's notes he wrote '...John Coad of St. Ives, Cornwall remembers when his family lived in Antwerp as agents for the boats. He also recollects seeing the schooner Harmony sailing from Antwerp Harbour for Newfoundland dressed overall......'
I have a photo of this Schooner leaving Ghent Cannal and have original poscards sent to the Coad family in Belgium, also photographs of the Coad childred.
I have with my own research come across John Day Coad Master Mariner/Ship Owner he Captained the MARY COAD (ON 69456) in 1881 the owner on the register at Padstow was Joseph Grigg Coad, JG Coad also owned PRINCE ALBERT.
If there are any descendants on this list that can help me further my research, I can provide copies of the photos etc.
Look forward to making contact
John Phillips (UK)
