Re: Look-Up Needed

In Reply to: Look-Up Needed by Carol Hanna of 43

I had, just a few days ago, been reviewing my notes of the history of the old Saguache Baptist Church which used to be across the street from my home here in Saguache. I saw in a reference from an old newspaper clipping that there had been funeral services for a man and his wife at about the same time and I thought I remembered the name Hanna. Sure enough it was in regard to the couple you are inquiring about. So I went down to the newspaper office here today and looked through their old newspaper files. I found these two articles, both from the Saguache Chronicle, Saturday, January 3, 1880:

Page 1, col. 2:

"A large congregation were present at the Baptist Church last Sunday morning to hear the funeral sermon of Mr. Henry Hanna. Mr. Hanna's wife has since died, and was buried on the last day of the year. Dr. Cornelius is to preach her funeral sermon at the Baptist Church next Sunday morning."

[Dr. Cornelius was Rev. Samuel Cornelius, who was the most educated and renowned minister that Saguache ever had. His father was Samuel Cornelius, founder of the American Baptist Publication Society.]

Page 1, col. 3:

"DIED

HANNA -- Died at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. A. Pumphrey, on Friday December 26, 1879, Mr. Henry Hanna, of Rryan [sic], Williams County, Ohio, aged seventy years.

HANNA -- Died at the residence of her brother, Mr. A. Pumphrey, on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1879, Mrs. Mary A. Hanna, wife of Henry Hanna, aged fifty-three years."

[Mr. Absolm Pumphrey was one of the founders of the town of Milton, just a mile from Saguache, and he was very respected. He had just in the fall, 1879, been elected Saguache County Treasurer and took office in January 1880.]

I also called the keeper of the cemetery records, but their names are not listed. However, since their funerals were held at the Baptist Church, they were undoubtedly buried in Hillside Cemetery just a half mile outside of Saguache. That cemetery was started by the Baptist Church and was its cemetery. There are many, many unmarked graves. Since it states that she was already buried on January 31, it must have been here at Saguache. It seems rather odd to me that she was buried before her funeral service!

Hope this helps. It seems destiny that I should have just read about them shortly before I found your message.
