Another piece of the puzzle can be added. I had some research conducted at the City Library of Colorado Springs and found a book regarding the history of the city's fire department (paid). Photos of the first group included my paternal great-grandfather- Charles Reuben Berrey. He was a "driver" of the fire department wagons, drove the wagon in the annual Flower Festival, and was with this team during the period of 1895 when the city council decided to replace J.G. Johnson with Chief E. E. Baty. Good background information on their decision is found in the city newspaper. I have more info if you are interested.
