Marjorie, I may have jumped to an erreoneous conclusion.
The census threw me. In many yrs of research I've run across many "oddities", but I hadn't encountered anything like this.

1895 Oswakie, Jefferson Co KS
KIENTZ
John R 39 NY; farmer
Adelia M 10 KS
Flossa P 8 KS
Lora A 7 KS
Chester R 1 KS
Mary H 38 IL; help

I concluded this Mary was a relative, and his wife Mary was dec'd.
Why would she be listed at the end of household members as "help", rather than listed aft John as wife?
My apologies!
