Marjorie, I checked the 1875 KS census, hoping he was still there, but no luck, altho parents still there. I couldn't find him 1880. Did you? 1886 he is on the San Francisco Voter's List, but no way of knowing if Mary with him. By 1890 he's in Erie Co NY, where he grew up, served CW Co E 187th NY Inf,and applied for his CW pension 7-1890....then to CO. I don't know if CW file will help re: Mary, but it should give you a d/date for Louis. It should also list all the places he's lived since the war. He really had the wanderlust! Little guy, only 5'2", but maybe grew a bit in his 20s.

I took a different tactic. This is a longshot.
This is all Jefferson Co KS
Possible Louis/Mary divorced? I know this Mary was not the wife of Jacob Jr or Geo.
1880 Mary KINTZ 25 IN OH IN; servant for the KIRBY family.

don't if same Mary as b/place is different
1895 Mary H KIENTZ 38 IL; living as "help" with John R KIENTZ, widower [m Mary SHELTON 1884].
By 1900 Mary H KIENTZ, is m to John. She appears to be the same Mary as 1895.

I find it interesting ...1900 Jacob, is lvg with son John, Jefferson Co; w/Mary is with dau Dora, Topeka, Shawneee KS

She is NOT Mary SHELTON, who d 1893-95
