Howard Coburn LONGFELLOW 1902-1918
This individual shares a headstone with Minnie P. LONGFELLOW (1893-1918) in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Jefferson County, Colorado. His burial date was June 12, 1918, but the headstone was not put in place until 1940.
My great-grandfather, Jonathan LONGFELLOW, and his descendants have lived in and around Denver for 4 generations. We believe the Minnie P. who shares the headstone was my grandfather's little sister, Minnie Pearl. She had very long hair and, according to family history, died when her hair caught fire in a candle flame, in 1918.
While we all know this story about Minnie's death, none of us has ever heard of Howard C. It's been speculated that he is the son of Minnie's oldest brother, Barton James. Even if that is correct, it does not tell us how or where he died. We have not been able to locate him with Barton in a census (or anywhere else, for that matter).
It seems unusual for an aunt and nephew to share a headstone -- although that may have been a simple matter of economics. According to cemetery records, Howard was buried a couple of months before Minnie died, so we know he did not die in Minnie's fire.
My grandfather was a great storyteller, and it seems unusual that, of all those of his stories that his children and grandchildren remember, no one remembers a story about Howard C. and how he came to have died so close to the time of Minnie's untimely death.
