Hi Rosemary, I'm an archaeologist for the BLM in Vernal Utah. Bill Redman's grave is located between Dinosaur CO. and Vernal UT, on a low laying bench called "Dead Man's Bench". The grave is fenced off with a wire and pole fence and has a sandstone headstone incised with a cross (Reportedly placed by Boy Scouts and/or CCC workers). According to historic records, Bill was involved in a gunfight over local politics in Grand County. After the fight he fled to the area UT/CO border where he was found by Andy Strong of the K Ranch, on what was later named as Deadman Bench. Redman had written his name on his saddle and in the sand. He then turned his horses loose and committed suicide. Strong, who was on his way to Ouray, UT, continued his trip, and notified the Indian agency, who then reportedly buried Redman at the present grave site. There is another version of the story recounted by George Long. This version implies that Bill Redman was killed by an unknown man in connection with the gunfight. The account also suggests that Redman was buried by a member of the Burton family from nearby Jensen UT, and that CCC employees were responsible for the construction of the fence. An article from teh New York Times in 1883 suggests that Bill Redman was one of the "masked men" responsible for the death of County Commissioners during the gunfight in Grand County, Colorado. (New York Times 1883) This information was compiled by Montgomery Archaeological Consultants. I have personally visited the interesting site, and I can attest to the fact of someone being buried exactly where the fence and marker are, as some human remains were eroding out of the grave. It has since been stabilized. -Shannyn Notify Administrator about this message?
