Oops - when I was proofreading this I accidentally posted it before correcting it - sorry to reply to my own post. Correction below in brackets.

All I know is that when I go to Custer County Census rolls, I find NO Figge's listed in 1880 or 1885. And my grandfather was adopted by the Figge's in MO about 1876. He had a patent issued in Alhambra IL in 1895, and in 1899 he wrote a poem that started "As I have come here from the east, Almost four years ago at least..." which points to his coming in about 1885.[should have been 1895 *not* 1885]

He married in 1899 (in Huerfano Co), and he and his wife appear in the 1900 census in Silver Cliff, and also in the 1910 census and the 1920 census. No other Figge's appear in Custer Co. on any census rolls of this period except John Figge and his family.

So either Frank Schick didn't write the list in 1890, or the Figge that he remembered died between the time he was supposed to have come to the area and 1890 - but my grandfather John Figge who had a store in Custer County from 1908 to his death in 1938 did NOT come to Colorado (and neither did his parents or his adopted parents) before 1895.
