Edward, Thanks for the reply. A very helpful John Clonts had sent me the papers from a application file of Mahala's daughter for Eastern Cherokee share of money appropriated for Eastern Cherokee. In it I learned that James was Mahala's father and that Abram Hembree was Mahala's grandfather. In it I also learned that the surname was often Emory or Emery. With that in mind, this Hamilton Co TN 1860 census is interesting:

James Emory aged 70 born SC
Nancy " aged 72 "
William " aged 35 born TN

on the same page is:
John Emory 45 TN
Nancy 22 TN
William 1 TN

also on the same page:
Benjamin Emory 26 TN
Harriet 20 TN

also of interest:
Knox Co KY 1850 census

James Hembree 32 TN
Catherine 25 KY
Rebecca 8 KY
Margaret 6 KY
Phebe 2 KY
Sarah 2/12 KY

also 1850 Murray Co GA census page 261:
Reuben Emery 48 SC
Sarah 41 SC
Elizabeth 22 GA
Mary E. 16 GA
Martha 15 GA
Talitha 13 GA
Malinda 11 GA
Sealy 8 GA ffemale
Manerva 6 GA

Keep looking, Joann
