Edward,Thanks for the reply.A very helpful John Clonts had sent me the papers from a application file of Mahala's daughter for Eastern Cherokee share of money appropriated for Eastern Cherokee.In it I learned that James was Mahala's father and that Abram Hembree was Mahala's grandfather.In it I also learned that the surname was often Emory or Emery.With that in mind, this Hamilton Co TN 1860 census is interesting:
