Greetings Chris,
Sorry for delay, two conferences to prepare papers for, publishers, etc., etc.
1. I have had the chance to study your family tree. I see the name Samuel is quite strong but Christopher is rare (what was your father's name?) The association between the two names in a branch of the family in Northern Ireland was what I was looking into and had hopes for, but the case has weakened with the absence of Christophers in your branch. Interestingly other N. Carolina Clinton names also occur in this branch (William, Peter, James). This branch were Church of Ireland (Episcopalian).
2. There is a Northern Ireland link with North Carolina. Richard Clinton from Sampson County was born there. The distance between Sampson County and Orange County is about 100 miles.
3. There would appear to be 10 Clintons on record in North Carolina in the late 18th century. The names are all very strong in the Clinton branches in England and Ireland which doesn't help to narrow it down.
4. Have you looked into the possibilty that Robert Clinton of Hillsborough in Orange County was the father of Matthias? and William his brother? The dates look good.
Best Wishes
Mark C.
