Hello I am searching for my GGG Grandfather Michael Dewitt Clinton,(1822-1898) the information I have is that he was born in New York in or around 1822 the dates that i have are between 1818 and 1822 his father is listed as a Joseph Clinton Jr and grandfather as Joseph Clinton Sr, he moved to Kanawha Co, West Virginia around 1840 where he married a Roxalana P "Roxy" Fisher between 1840 and 1844 Their children were Charles Bingley Clinton (1845-1932), George Dunreath Clinton(1846-1875) Mary Ann Clinton (1848-1922) John Dewitt Henry Clinton (1849-1912), Summitt Wellington (1851-1884)Saina C Clinton (1851-1851) Henry Franklin Clinton (1853-1864) Joseph S Clinton (1855-1859) Hiram Wade Clinton (1858-1858) Sidney Clinton (1859-1879) Jacob Clinton (1862-1889) Ida Jane Clinton (1864- ? ) Robert Milton Clinton (1868-1921)
Michael also owned a large portion of land in Kanawha Co, WVA and he seemingly was one of the earliest settlers in the county, he also seems to be listed as a Captain I am not sure if this was from being in the service and serving in the military or from running or owning a ship, in the 1840 cencus i believe it was from memory he was found to have 2000.00 on him. during the time that he came to Kanawha Co WVA the Gov was giving out land grants to those who were willing to relocate and venture into the west and deal with the indians at that time.. this was just before the trail of tears began and the indians were removed from the territory... Also I have been told that Our family has Cherokee Indian Blood in our history, i am trying to find any information I can to account for this. this has been told by not only my mother but from her father who was a clinton and from his parents as well. any help that i can find would be greatly appriciated. thank you
