Cline name Re: Scottish vs. German

In our family the name came from the German. Originally, however, we were from France. The name in France was Petite (little people) and most of my family is short. The family was Huegonots during the Dark Ages and had to leave France due to persecution. They fled to Germany where the name was given them of Klinite (little people). The family history says two brothers fought as Hessian soldiers in the American Revolutionary War and elected to stay in this country after the War. The name was reduced to Klein. It is said that my great great grandfather changed the spelling to Kline, then inserted a C instead of a K to make it Cline. Some of the family also ended up in Ireland and were Orangemen at that time. Peqe
