This was Shores Erastus Clinard, the son of Jacob Franklin Clinard and Cora Alice Shores, Jacob's first wife. Jacob Franklin Clinard married his second wife, my g-g-grandmother, Mary Lou Mathis, in 1897. Shores was born in 1880 in Decatur Co, GA.

I have a copy of his obituary, from the newspaper in Mathews Co, Gloucester Co, VA, where he resided many years. Here it is in full:

MATHEWS (VA) - Major Shores E. Clinard, retired medical officer, Army of the United States, died in a Richmond hospital Friday night, August 6, (1948), following an extended illness.

A funeral service was held in Arlington National Cemetery at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, with full military honors, followed by interment.

For the past four years Major Clinard had resided at Mathews Courthouse with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis D. Forrest, who survive, in addition to two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Samuel Forrest.

The 1945 edition of Biographical Encyclopedia of the World carried under "Who's Important in Medicine" the following brief biography of Major Clinard:

"Major Shores E. Clinard, Medical Corps of the U.S.A. (retired) Flight Surgeon. Born August 29, 1880, in Decatur County, Georgia. Son of J.F. and Cora (Shores) Clinard. Educated at Emory University; M.D. 1908. School for Flight Surgeons 1922. Married Love Elizabeth English on October 6, 1901. (Mrs. Clinard died January 1945 at the home of her daughter (Lovie C.) Mrs. Dennis D. Forrest. Dr. Clinard was engaged in general private practice of medicine in Florida 1908 to 1917. During First World War served in U.S. Army 1917 - 1919. In Public Health Service 1919 - 1920. Again joined U.S. Army, serving as Flight Surgeon until 1934, then retired due to physical disability. Held rank of Major. Awarded Purple Heart. Memberships include American Medical Association, Tidewater Medical Association and Pi Gamma Mu. Retired in 1934 and made home in Gloucester for 10 years. Has made home with daughter, Mrs. Dennis D. Forrest, in Mathews for the past year."

I have other information on him too, since he was my grandfather's half-brother.
