Martha Clinard...who is father??

Hi,

If you look at the descendency chart I previously posted for Davis Clinard Sr. you'll see a Brice and a Martha listed as his children. I have wondered about these two for a while. Where did this Brice come from? And where did he go? And I suspect Martha is not Davis' child, but is actually Alfred's (Davis' son) daughter. Here's why:

In Davis' obituary it is stated he had a total of ten children and that two died in his native state (NC) and one died in the civil war. Also in a letter written in the 1930's by Prudence Ellen Clinard, his daughter, she states she had only eight brothers and one sister and names them. Prudence does not mention either Brice or Martha. Apparently I have too many children for Davis Clinard on my chart.

Davis' son Alfred was born in 1842 in Indiana and I have a paper that says he married a Martha Lucinda Driver in 1859 in Randolph Co., Indiana. The Martha Clinard in question was born around 1859 in IN. Was this their daughter, named after her mother?

Martha may have been living with Davis Clinard and his family in MI because Alfred died during the civil war and therefore she would have been with the family when they moved to MI after the war about 1864. I have a paper from a family member that states Martha Clinard born in 1959 in IN and married Wesley WILLIS as his second wife.

I have been given information from Howard Cooper, a descendent of Martha Jane Clinard, that Martha Jane Clinard (whose father was an "Alferd" Clinard) married Robert Wesley Willis(b. 1852)and had their first child in 1877. If Robert Wesley Willis was born 1852 he would have been 25 (and Martha would have been 18) when he and Martha had their first child, and was old enough to have been married previously. Indeed, this source states his first wife was Nancy CROSS and they were married 30 JUN 1872. Nancy died shortly after their child was born. Robert Wesley Willis would then have married our Martha Jane Clinard in 1877.

So, what do you all think about this? Does this make sense? Does anyone have any corrections or additional information?

Rick
