Claiborne Clifton - Mary Cooper, Columbia, SC early 1800's
Seeking anyone with knowledge of the life of Claiborne Clifton (1766-1826) or his wife Mary Cooper (1775-1839).I am trying to research my own Cooper ancestry and have reason to believe there may be a connection to this couple.
I am in possession of an obituary of a Sarah E. Center, a sister to my GGgrandmother, Emily F. Cooper, about whom I know very little, that states in part "Her maiden name was Cooper, but left an orphan at an early age, she was adopted and raised by her uncle, Maj. Robert Clifton of Columbia..."
Since, I have been unable to find a Robert Clifton and have also seen Claiborne Clifton referred to as Major, I am wondering if whoever furnished the information for the obit may have just furnished the wrong given name (Sarah died in 1894, age 81).
Claiborne Clifton and his wife Mary are buried at the Washington Street Methodist Church in Columbia as are my GGgrandmother Emily F. Cooper (Porter)who died in 1858 and another sister Miss Caroline Cooper (died 1854), the only person in that cemetery with the Cooper surname.Sarah E. Center's first husband, a John M. Waring (died 1849) is buried at Washington Street as well, though Sarah is not.
Claiborne Clifton and Mary Cooper had three children of their own but I was wondering if anyone knew whether they may have raised other children or could confirm my suspicions that my Coopers may be related to Mary Cooper Clifton.A special thanks to Bob Klebs for furnishing the information I do have on Claiborne Clifton but I am hoping there is someone else out there who also has some information. If so, I look forward to hearing from you.
Robert
