Sorry I do not have any Clift Owens in my tree as far as I know - all I can say is that it seemed to be a bit of a fashion in Devon & Cornwall to retain surnames from female ancendants. I do have a Vittery Clift in my tree. Your Clift Owens could well have had a Clift female higher up in his tree.
