Newton Clift in Lincolnshire

My grandfather Harry Newton Clift was born in Haxey, Lincoln in 1877 according to the 1881 census but I've failed to find his birth cert. Since his father was in the army this could just mean he was born somewhere different but it means I can't get any further back. Find myself wondering if there is a connection to Tennessee line since he named his oldest son Charles Newton Clift and every other Newton Clift seems to have originated there. Did some member of the family come back. Great grandfather is alleged to have been a rough rider in the light brigade but doesn't appear in the lists for the disaster at Balaclava. I'm loath to think I come from a family with an over powerful imagination but it would be nice to find some sort of link into the rest of the world
