Nancy, I have data that sounds suspiciously close to yours and wonder if one of us is getting two families mixed up. I have a Wm H. Clift b. Apr 18, 1827 in VT. His father was Elias Clift and the family removed to Wyoming County NY. This William married Lorinda Slawson March 31, 1859 in Janesville, WI. The tie of William to his father and his exact birth date was given to me by another Clift researcher. However, I have checked the census records myself and they are generally consistent: 1850, age 21 in Castille, Wyoming, NY living with the Macomber family; shows born in VT. 1860, age 34 in Forest, Richland, WI living with wife Lovinda and children Frank and Ange; shows born in NY 1870, name given as W.H., age 43, in Prescott, Faribault, MN living with wife L.I. and children Frank, W.F., Georgiana; shows born in VT. 1870 (entered twice), name given as W.U. (or H?), age 43 in Prescott, Faribault, MN living with wife Lovinda? and children Frank, William and Gertrude; shows born in VT. I realize that there are inconsistencies in the census records, but they generally agree with the data that was given me. Additionally, I have a very high confidence in the person who gave me the data. Do you think that there were two unrelated Clift families living in Faribault?
