I recall a Richard (aka Dick) Clift, living in the Short Heath or New Invention areas of Willenhall (a small town adjacent to Wolverhampton). He was a friend of my father's and was in his 60's in the 1940's when I knew him, which is consistent with someone being 24 in 1901. This Richard Clift had two sons, Bert and Basil. Bert was a teacher and subsequently became headteacher of New Invention Primary School. He died prematurely of heart disease around 1959. Basil had been a promising young footballer in the late 1930's and had been signed as a professional by West Bromwich Albion. War service interrupted his footballing career, and I recall that he was given a 'free transfer' around about 1947, or 1948.
Is it possible that these are your relatives? Although they are Clifts, my father told me that they not, to his knowledge, relatives of ours. However, I do know that 'my' branch of the Black Country Clifts orginated in the Madeley area of Shropshire, as did yours, so perhaps we are distantly related after all.
Best wishes,
Philip Clift.
