If you go to www.familysearch.com and do a search for William Clift, you'll find several people have entered information about this William Clift. Much of the information you find needs to be proved, but at least it gives you locations and dates you can look up.

If you go to the 1880 census, you should find one of his children who would have the mother and father's state of birth entered, which would help in the proofs.

Earlier in this forum, there are notes about Indiana Clifts.
Two descendants of William of Marshfield MA were in IN before 1850, but they are not related to your William.

As you may know, there is disagreement about whether a descendant of William of Marshfield, Joseph, founded a southern line of Clifts.

Good luck.
