Dear Phil,

Many thanks for your family history. Will put it in my file with the rest Clift family. At this stage I can't see any links. I'm still waiting for 1861 Census of Wolverhampton (Raglan St)to arrive, then I may have a better idea and need to search Nailsworth Baptisms abt 1794. What I know:

Beryl Clift (Typist, Machinist) b. 18.11.1936 Manchester Lancs England -m-Dennis John Smith 1955 Manchester. Children born Manchester: Christopher John & Debra Kim(me)Smith. Leanne Denise Smith born NSW, Australia.

Charles Joseph James Clift (Crane Driver/Labourer) b. 11.11.1899 Finchfield Tettenhall Wolverhampton Staffs -m- Selina Heenan Wolverhampton. Children all born Manchester: Dorothy Sarah, Marjorie Edith, Sylvia, Selina & Beryl Clift.

Charles Clift (Carpenter/Undertaker) b. 6.9.1863 Raglan Street Wolverhampton Staffs
-m- Annie Elizabeth Bartlam St. Marks Wolverhampton. Children born Wolverhampton: Winifred Harriet, Clara Elizabeth, Jessie May, Annie Victoria, Nellie, Charles Joseph James, George Victor, John Lewis, Isaac Ronald, Edith Muriel, Vera Kathleen & Sidney Harold Clift.

Isaac Clift (Edge Tool Maker/Journeyman) b. abt 1828 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire -m- Lucy Jones St. Johns Wolverhampton July 1851. Only (known) child Charles Clift b. 6.9.1863 Raglan Street Wolverhampton. I believe there were more children born to Isaac & Lucy Clift. Hoping to find them on 1861 census.

Thomas Clift (Edge Tool Maker) b. abt 1796 Nailsworth, Gloucestershire married Ann. Known children: Mary Ann, Thirza & Isaac Clift all born Wolverhampton, baptised St. Peters, Wolverhampton.

Thomas had own business-Edge Tool Maker employing 9 men. Lived:68 Pountney St, Wolverhampton in 1851 with his family. Wife Ann b. abt 1801 Stourbridge Worcestershire. I think there may have been more children born to Thomas and Ann. Yet to find out. I am also trying to find the birth or baptism of Thomas but to date no luck. The only one so far around that time was baptised in Codsall, child of William Clift and Mary?

I will have to get a hold of the Nailsworth Baptisms to see if there is a record of him & any brothers or sisters & of course his parents.

NOTE: There was a "marriage" for a Thomas Clift & Ann (BIRD) in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire (not far from Nailsworth)& on the 1851 Census a Philip BIRD (Widow - House Proprietor) age about 73 born in Willenhall was living next door to them. Could be a coincidence or could be Ann's relation. I'm not sure when Thomas & Ann moved to Wolverhampton, but all 3 (known) children were born in Wolverhampton. Can't find too many other marriages about the right time for a Thomas Clift & Ann ?

Anyhow I will keep your information and if I come across anything of interest I will contact you again. Would you do the same? It all takes time to search from Australia and I really would appreciate any help. Bye for now... Debbie
