In searching my Beal (Beall) line I came across a James E. Clift living in DC on the 1880 census (Branch Road), age 33, wife Laura J. with two stepsons, James A. Beall age 18 and John M. Beall age 14. I am not sure if any relations to your Clift line. I am stuck with my Beal line at this moment.
