Have tried to add known names for indexiing Trying different way to find relatives of Richard Harry Clifford. In 1921, Richard made seven canes from rounds of cow-horn from Texas long-horn cattle brought to the railhead in the panhandle of Oklahoma in the last long-horn cattle drive. He used the horns clipped from the cattle before being put on the railroad cars. The handles were made of bone, the horn-rounds being placed for each cane on an iron rod the top end of which was drilled into the bone-handle. He kept one cane and sent the others to relatives, one we know going so far north as Canada. Richard Harry was also known at times as “Dick, “Judge Dick”, and, during his days as an army scout-in the post-civil-war west, as “Curley Clifford” He was born in Ireland April 12, 1850. His parents names were Patrick CLIFFORD and Mary or Delia Josephine ST. LEDGER (LEGER) CLIFFORD. He immigrated with his parents to the United States when he was 3-7 months old, making the date for immigration, July or November, 1850. It is said that the family lived in New York. His mother is said to have died when he was 27 months old. This would make her death date July of 1852. Some of his sibling's names were supposed to be, a brother, Patrick, three sisters, Delia, Anna, and Mary, all being born in Ireland. At age 14 he ran away from home but was found. Again at age 17 he ran away from home and never returned again or had contact with his family. Family folklore says he ran away so as to avoid priesthood. He became a Scout and was with Buffalo Bill the second time he ran away. (This was told to the family by his daughter.) His nickname while a scout was, Curley. He married Emily A. CORSON , daughter of Eli CORSON and Sarah RAFFERTY, CORSON, on July 7, 1877, in Dennison, Iowa. He died in 1922 in Beaver County, OK and is buried in Forgan Cemetery. For many years, Richard Harry lived in Nebraska, practicing law of a rough and ready kind. Do any Clifford descendents out there have such a cane?
