John Robert "J. R. " Clifford of Hardy County, VA (1848-1933)
A postage stamp of John Robert "J.R." Clifford of the Hardy County, VA Cliffords was recently issued by the USPS.
The Hardy County Cliffords were "free people of color" as early as 1796. The patriarch is believed to be Isaac Clifford (c. 1776 - 1831).Two is Isaac's great-grandsons were J.R. Clifford, a lawyer in Martinsburg, WV and Theodore Kent Clifford, a United Brethren minister in Harrisonburg, VA.
Isaac Clifford was affiliated in some way with the Cliffords of Hunterdon, NJ and Ligonier, PA through James Clifford, the only Clifford head of household in the 1790 VA census.James Clifford was married to Prudence WHITE.
Mary Clifford, possibly a daughter of James Clifford, was married to John MULLIN, owner of the Mullin Hotel in Moorefield, VA in the 1850s.
Still have not been able to determine how Isaac Clifford aquired the "Clifford" name.
An alternate theory about the origin of the Cliffords of Hardy County, VA states that the patriarch was an Irishman, Jacob Clifford, for whom Clifford Hollow in WV was named.
