Robert Clyatt
We all know that Robert received the Berkeley County land grant in 1703. I've been trying to figure out where his application for the grant might be located to see what information might be found there. The archives in South Carolina claims to have only the recording of the grant. I went to the National Archives in Kew, England over the holidays and looked in Colonial Document Class CO 5/398; America and West Indies, Original Correspondence, Land Grants. Their description notwithstanding, it was a hodge podge of grants in no discernable order which only contained the information we already know. The archivist suggested that the application might be contained in the papers of the proprietor or company that controlled Berkely County although he had no idea where they might be found.
