The following is family lore, unless specific sources of information are mentioned. Verify that the information is true and factual for yourself.

Clewis Family

Lewis Clewis m. Mary Ivy 16 May 1821 in Robeson NC . They migrated to Dooley Co. Ga. after 1830. The family appears in the 1840 Dooley GA census. In the 1850 federal census of Dooley Co. GA, Lewis Clewis (age 50, b. NC) appears with his wife, Mary (age 51, b. NC), sons Charles (age 20, b. NC) and Lewis (age 18, b. NC).
She died before the 1860 federal census in Dooley, GA
They had at least 2 children:
Charles Clewis b. abt. 1830 in NC
Louis Clewis b. abt. 1831 in NC

Louis Clewis (b. abt. 1831, spelled Louis and Lewis in various places) left Georgia and according to family lore was wandering around in east Texas where he met and married Elizabeth Jones (b. abt. 1845 AL) about 1860. (A record of the marriage has not been located. It is assumed to be in Wood County, TX, as the Wood County courthouse burned in the 1870s.) Louis is buried in the Clewis Family Cemetery that is located on the (present day) Green Ranch in Rains County. The date of his death is unknown, but his wife had remarried by 1880. No death certificate was filed at this early date.

They had four children:
Mary A. Clewis b. abt 1861
Jefferson Davis Clewis b. abt. 1862
William T. Clewis b. abt. 1864
Richard L. Clewis b. abt. 1866

Mary A. Clewis (no further information)

Jefferson Davis Clewis was born in Wood County, TX. and lived in Rains County Texas (By all accounts, it was the same place. Rains county was formed from parts of Wood, Van Zandt and Hunt counties in mid 1870, July, I think.) He married Mrs. Fannie (Hair) Evans (b. abt. 1851 AL). She was about 10 years his senior. His official cause of death is listed as pneumonia in 1904, although family stories say he died from sunstroke.
       They had 6 children:

Lewis Clewis b.00/08/1882 m. Addie Creel d. Rains Co. TX., had three children.
Francis Elizabeth Clewis b. Oct. 7, 1884 m. William Franklin Childers on July 9, 1904 in Rains County, Texas, had 12 children.
Sara Jessie (Sallie) Clewis b. 1888 m. Evin Shivers, had 5 children.
Barzetta (may be Barzella) Clewis b. 1890 m. Ed Bullard, had 8 children.
       Louella Clewis b. 1890 d. 1896 (Twin to ÒBarzieÓ)
Lela b. ??/08/92 m. Jess Long, had 5 children, then m. Earle Childers (Brother of Wm. Franklin Childers) and they had 7 children.

William T. Clewis (no further information)

Richard L. Clewis b. 1866 was born in Wood County, TX. and lived in Rains County Texas. Richard was married to Florentine (b. 1867, d. 1942). They had children. Richard and Florentine are buried in the Clewis Cemetery in Rains County.
