I belive you are mistaken. Clewis is a variation on Cluis, which is a French name. You will find Cluis in the Vine and Olive community in Alabama in the early 1800's. This was an experiment funded by the U.S. to start a wine and olive oil industry in the U.S. People were brought over from France to populate the colony. It did not prosper.

Also, there are articles that suggest that a group of Clewis family members escaped from the Haiti slave rebellion in 1804. Haiti was a French colony.

There are Clewis families in Texas from Louisiana, which has a rich heritage of both French and Acadians, who were of French origin.

I don't know where you got the idea they originated in England, but I believe you are mistaken.
