Augustus Clewis - NC/TX b. abt. 1840

Looking for any information on Augustus Clewis and his ancestry. He was born about 1840 in North Carolina; married Mary Varnum by abt. 1867 (first child born abt. 1867).

He moved his family from North Carolina (probably Robeson County as that is where Varnums were from) to Gonzales County Texas. He is on the Gonzales County census in 1880. His 11 yr old was born in NC and 5 yr old was born in TX, putting the move between 1869 and 1875.

Children listed to him and Mary in 1880 were: William H., age 13, b. NC; Molly J., age 11, b. NC; Fanny E., age 5, b. TX (my husband's line); Susan, age 2, b. TX; Richard O. or D., age 1 month, born in April in TX. Also living with them is John F. Varnum, age 17; Elvy Varnum, age 12; Ann C. Bass, age 8; Andrew Bass, age 5 (probably nieces and nephews). Living at the house next to them are Mary's parents, Mike "Spier" Varnum and Mary, both age 60.

Can anyone shed some light on these families, especially Augustus Clewis and who and where he came from?
