Hi Mari, this is definitely the same family. Harry Clewell had a sister Emma. Emma was my GreatGreat-grandmother. Harry and Emma's parents were Sophia ORTH and Joseph Robert Clewell. Harry's middle name was Orth.

Yes, the original Clewells (Clavel's) were French Huguenots. When Louisa Clewell settled in Nazareth in the early 1700's with here two sons, they started the Moravian church there. Go to the CLEWELLFAMILY.COM website - you'll find Harry and Mary listed, along with many, many other Clewells. Half the town can trace back to Louisa.

The ORTH ancestors came to Philadelphia in early 1800's. I've been corresponding with someone from that line, and he's traced the family back to 1600's in France.

I had traced Joseph R. Clewell up to the 1920 Census, but then lost him, thinking that the Joseph and Dorothy listed in the 1930 Census was a completely different family...(didn't realize that he had remarried). I'm glad I found your post, and glad to find another distant cousin.

I've copied some of the information I have on Joseph Robert Clewell and Sophia Orth.

Donna
