My ancestor, Augusta Cleverly, (born between 1846 and 1860 in Hong Kong) was the spouse of a prosperous German merchant in Shanghai - Oscar Brandt. I believe that Augusta was related to Charles St George Cleverly. In fact, some of Augusta's children and grandchildren followed in Charles St George's footsteps in the profession of Civil Engineer and Architect. (Though engineering skills also were inherited from the Brandts, as Oscar's brother Alfred Brandt was the Civil Engineer who designed the Simplon Tunnel in Switzerland.)
Augusta and Oscar Brandt had eight children - the youngest Mary married Lord John Robert Campbell-Heathcote (born Stanwell, Middlesex and grandson of Baron William Heathcote) and was presented at Court in the early 1920's.
After Oscar Brandt died, Augusta re-married to a James Mooney (Master Mariner) and she had a further three children. Augusta's descendants are spread across the world - those known to me being in England, Australia and the United States of America.
My grandfather, Alfred Lois Brandt, was Augusta's fifth child. He was an Architect and Merchant with the firm Brandt and Rodgers in Shanghai before migrating to Australia in 1950. (My mother migrated to Australia in March 1937.)
I recently received a transcript of "My ancestor built Hong Kong", by the late Charles Peter Cleverly which appeared in the Weekend Telegraph of Saturday May 17 1997. The newspaper cutting from the Telegraph included a photograph of Charles St George Cleverly. On seeing the photo, I now know for sure that my Cleverly ancestor is either Charles St George or a brother. The resemblance to the family portrait which has been in my possession since a child is quite remarkable. Though the name on the rear of the portrait depicts it as being of a James Cleverly.
Charles St George Cleverly's elder brother, Osmund Cleverly, was also in the colony of Hong Kong. Osmund Cleverly was actually in Hong Kong prior to Charles St George's arrival and was probably the reason why Charles St George decided to move there. Osmund Cleverly was a Sea Captain but was also apparently a qualified Engineer Surveyor. He later became British Consular Agent at the Port of Macau. Osmund Cleverly is noted for acquiring land at auction for a Protestant Cemetery at Belle View Macao. He was also the Trustee of the Protestant Cemetery Committee (founded in 1858).
Is there perhaps a descendant of Charles St George Cleverly or Osmund Cleverly or someone else who could enlighten me as to who Augusta Cleverly's father was? I am also interested in learning more about Charles St George Cleverly and Osmund Cleverly, particularly who their parents were.
