I'm descended from a William Cleverley. According to family lore-- I've never seen any official records that document any of this, so take it with a grain of salt-- he was born in London 13 Jan. 1803. At 13 he was bound to a watchmaker in Coventry, and hating the work, he ran away at 17 to London, where he sold pies and cakes on the streets. Two years later he ran into his former "employer" who convinced him to come back to Coventry, where he was jailed for six months for running away. After his release he worked for the watchmaker six months before again running away to London. He married around age 21 to a Rebecca and they nine children, eight of whom died in infancy. The surviving child, Mary Ann, was born 12 Jan. 1832, and Rebecca died in 1833. He then bounced between London and Coventry, marrying a Mary Lovett and having four more children, three daughters surviving. Mary died in 1845 and he married a Caroline Seal in 1846, and they had a son. In 1847 William, his son Jonathan, and his brother Thomas came to America, settling in Hamilton County, New York. After he accumulated some money he sent for his wife and children, but found that she had put his daughters in a Children's Home and disappeared with their son. He brought his daughters over and they eventually moved to Allamakee, Jasper, and Story Counties in Iowa.
So, I don't know how (or if) any of this might fit into the information about your William Cleverly, but with all of my ancestor's travels it seems we might be speaking of the same man.
