Lena, Try imagining that 90% of the population cannot read or write. In England prior to 1900 people didn't travel much, especially the poor! Accents changed every 10 miles or so and the speech of the uneducated would, in some cases could be unintelligible to someone from 20 or so miles away.
When they registered a Birth, Marriage or Death they told their names to whoever was doing the writing, be it at church or registry and he wrote what he heard! J.H.Rolfe.
