Seeking information and descendants of Capt. George Cleveland (1871-1925) of the Hudson Bay Co. in Nunavut, as well as Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA. Cleveland first went to the Arctic in the 1890s, and in 1900 he was put ashore on the Wager River, or near the entrance of Wager Bay or Wager Inlet, to open a trading post. His employers abandoned him there, and he was rescued by the local Inuit. His wives in Nunavut included Tabitia Taututtiaq (aka Tooteecheak, Taututsiak; b. c. 1885, the dau. of Kayardjuar of Ivallak and Nangar), Lea(h) Angnauyak (aka Angaujaq, Arnaujaq; the daughter of Capt. John Murray), Sapinaq, Kasugiaq, possibly Qaataniq, and perhaps others, in communities as far away as Cape Dorset. He had at least 14 Inuit children, perhaps more. Cleveland left the arctic temporarily in 1905, and while he probably returned to the north sooner, he definitely lived on Hudson Bay from 1913-1923, and 1924-25. He was first employed by the F. N. Monjo company, and perhaps also by the Lamson & Hubbard Company, before being hired by the Hudson Bay Company. He lived in Wager Bay, Cape Fullerton, Repulse Bay, and was master of the schooner "Fort Chesterfield" which provided supplies from Chesterfield Inlet. Capt. Cleveland was the eldest child of Henry N. Cleveland (1848-1929) and his wife Ann Eliza (Fish) Gibbs of Martha's Vineyard, MA, USA. If you are descended from, or have information regarding Capt. G. G. Cleveland, please contact us! Thanks for any help! Chris Notify Administrator about this message?
