I have been recently researching the William Clendinneng, founder in Montreal. It is my thought that he might have been the son of John Clendinnen, b:1805, Bandon, Ireland & Anne Green, b: 1805, Gorey, Co. Wexford, Ireland. This John was the brother to my 3x's great grandfather, Dr. William Clendinnen of Ireland, who never lived in Canada.
At this point, my research is not conclusive. From the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, it notes that Wm. Clendinneng was born Jun 22 1833 in Cavan, Ireland. A search for a baptismal record proved that a Wm. was in fact baptised shortly after, the son of John and Anne.
Also noted in the DCB is that Wm Clendinneng married Rachel Newmarsh May 3 1853. I did a search through the LDS of the Marriage Indexes of non-Catholics in Montreal and surrounding area with negative results. I was hoping to find a proof here as to who Wm's parents were.
Research has proven that John Clendinnen as described above lived in Montreal between atleast 1846-1858 and then emigrated to New Zealand and then Australia, where he died in 1873. His tombstone in the Melbourne General Cemetery states that his wife Ann died in Montreal in 1846, which gave me the clue to look here.
This John's Death Registration lists 10 children and their ages at his death, and he had a son, William Frederick, b: ca. 1833.
Can you verify any of the above, that Wm. the founder might well be the son of this couple? At present, I have found there are a good number of Clend-s who were in the Montreal area and I am definately finding it difficult to sort them all out. Sincerely
