Descendants of Andrew Clendenen Generation No. 1 1. ANDREW2 CLENDENEN (DAVID1 CLENDENIN) was born 1768 in Ireland, and died 1851 in Perry Twp, Hocking Co. OH. He married MARY Abt. 1799 in Pennsylvania. She was born 1778 in PA. I am speculating as to "David1" being Andrew's father. There is a Gravesite in West Newton?, Sewickley Twp., Westmoreland Co. PA: Sewickley United Presbyterian Church Cemetery for a David Clendenin, died 1801, age of 59 years. It is an interesting "coincidence" that this David dies the same year as David, son of Andrew is born (also born in Westmoreland Co.). Given the Ulster-Scots tradition of naming the firstborn son after the father's father, I am guessing that this David d.1801 in Westmoreland is Andrew's father - David's grandfather. Co., 1911, pgs - 107,108 "The township of Mount Pulaski has a class of citizens of which it may well be proud, as they are not only energetic and progressive but also recognize their obligations to both their country and their fellowmen and John Henry Clendenen is one of these. He makes his home on an eighty acre tract of land lying on section 10 and is known and respected as an earnest, forceful, Christian citizen of the township and country. He was born in Sangamon county, Illinois, January 30, 1865, a son of Sylvester and Bathsheba (Jones) Clendenen, who were early settlers of that county, having come from Ohio in 1854. After residing in Sangamon county for about forty years, the parents came to Logan county and located where our subject now resides. John H. was the sixth in order of birth in their family of nine children. After he received his education, which he secured through the medium of the public schools of the county, he taught school, working meanwhile upon his father's farm during the summer months and in his leisure hours. For five winters he taught the youth of the country and was rated as one of the most capable and finished teachers of the locality. He then decided to devote all his energy and ability to farming so gave up his school and took up agricultural pursuits. The year 1890 witnessed the marriage of John Henry Clendenen to Miss Mary Agnes Scroggin, a daughter of Leonard and Mary Scroggin of this county, belonging to one of the most prominent families in the county. She was born February 9, 1860, in Logan county and has always resided here. To this union there were born two children: Hazel Marie, whose birth occurred December25, 1893; and Rubie Olive, born October 24, 1898. Mr. Clendenen is a worthy member of the Mount Pulaski Lodge, No. 87, F. & A. M., and of the local lodge of the Modern Woodmen of America. He has been a democrat all his life and still is affiliated with that party. For the past none years he has been treasurer of the township school board and that he has rendered service most satisfactory to his fellow citizens is indicated in his continued reelection to the office. Both he and his wife are members of the Christian Church of Copeland, Logan county, and for many years they have taken an active part in church work. For the last fifteen years Mr. Clendenen has been an elder in the church and he still officiated in the same capacity, giving the benefit of his wide experience in matters affecting the up building of the church to his brethren. A quiet, effective Christian worker for the general up lift of his fellowmen, he has gained recognition as one of the best citizens of his community." From "History of the Disciples in Illinois 1819-1914" - online edition, copyright 1997, James L. McMillian John H. is mentioned on page 270 as an officer of the Copeland Christian Church, Mt.Pulaski, Logan Co., IL. (my note: in 1914?) Quote: "This congregation has been a leading force for good in the neighborhood there many years." More history of this church available in the booklet "The History of the Copeland Christian Church-1866-1966" by Ruby Clendenen Quandt (John H.'s daughter). One copy in the possession of Janice Quandt MacDaniels John H. was a school teacher at the Poordo (Oakland) School, near Lake Fork, IL Source: Two teacher's original daily registers from the school, 1894-1900 Text as follows: POORDO (OAKLAND) SCHOOL ATTENDANCE RECORDS 1894-1900 The following attendance records are transcribed from two original Teachers Daily Register books belonging to William L. Follis. He was a teacher at and his children attended the Poordo School (later known as Oakland) south of Lake Fork, Illinois, in Logan County. The school name is not written in the books but the following is on the title page: This book is the property of District 29, Town 17, Range 2, County of Logan, State of Illinois The number following the student's name is the child's age. Any notation that was written during the year, such as "moved away" and the date is included. Note that there are various spellings of names (examples: Fuiton/Fueten/Feuten or Coats/Coates). The names are transcribed as the teachers spelled them. Teacher Effie Wright filled in the list of parent/guardian for the school year, 1896-1897. This is the only year this was done. On the inside back cover of the first book are the names: W. L. Follis, Efie Wright, J. H. Clendenen, D. F. Nickols, L. K. Landis, Emma Deen (or Deere), Luella Laughery, All(?)Heart and Harry Piatt. The first five were teachers from 1894-1900, so this may be a list of teachers at Poordo School.
