I should make one other comment re an earlier response.

From my researches, there was no concerted central record keeping of births, deaths, marriages, etc. in Massachusetts until the 1800's. The records from those times that people can find now are all compilations. Sometimes individual cities or towns kept records. Sometimes churches kept records. Etc. Massachusetts started a state-wide program in the later 1800's to find and preserve what records still existed. It's known that many of those records are incomplete.
