Clemmons and Phillips, NC - VA - TN, 1760s

I am looking for parents for Clemmons Phillips, born 1763-1764 in North Carolina. I suspect a marriage link between these two NC families may be found. Clemmons married Agnes Turner in 1787 in Green County, Tennesee, and remained in Tenessee. His first son was named Reuben Phillips. There is also a Reuben Phillips family in NC; this Reuben could be his father, but there are problems with this idea. The name 'Clemmons' is unique as a first name in the Phillips family.

Any ideas?

Richard Ripley
